Topsy Turvy --- Little Joe's Way

With a mischievous twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face, Little Joe does his own version of topsy turvy.
What:  Last December I took a basket of Christmas decorations out to the corral to see if I could get some shots for a Christmas blog.  Those curious colts came through.  Before one can decorate the items need a bit of topsy turvy assist from Little Joe.  To see the rest of the photos and read the blog: She Wants Us to do What?

Off Topic: Update on the house remodel:  Furniture and other items has been moved out of the house and the repair work will begin as soon as the contractor gets the OK from the insurance company.  Farmers' Insurance has sure been good to work with us.  It is still hard to believe how much water got into the house from a small split in the ice maker hose while we were on vacation.

Cee Bucks Bottom aka Buck
stars as the strawberry roan bronc in the movie:
"The Rounders"
Howdy's (Henry Fonda) favorite saying in the movie: "Whatever suits you just tickles me plumb to death"

A favorite movie of mine staring that old strawberry roan horse with the help of Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda.  Light hearted, I laugh each time I see this movie on TV.  Information about the movie from Wikipedia just in case you have never seen it:

The Rounders (1965 film)From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Rounders is a lighthearted 1965 film starring Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. It was based on the novel of the same name by Max Evans.
Ben Jones (Glenn Ford) and Marion 'Howdy' Lewis (Henry Fonda) are two easygoing, modern-day cowboys who make a meager living breaking wild horses. Their frequent employer is Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills), a shrewd businessman who always gets the better of them. After they bring him a string of tamed horses, he talks them into taking a nondescript horse in lieu of some of their wages.
Ben finds (to his great and frequent discomfort) that the horse is unrideable. Rather than turning it into dog food, he comes up with the bright idea of taking it to a rodeo and betting other cowhands they cannot ride it. Along the way, the duo stop to help two none-too-bright strippers, Mary (Sue Ane Langdon) and Sister (Hope Holiday), with their car, which has broken down. Not knowing much about cars, they give them a ride to the nearest garage, but end up getting to know them better (going skinny dipping with them) and taking them along to the rodeo.
Everything goes as planned; nobody is able to stay on the horse. Then the animal suddenly collapses and Ben very reluctantly spends all the money they've won for veterinary help. In the end, Ben and Howdy end up right back where they started, with only the horse to show for their efforts.

Picture Perfect ~ Competition Time ~
Week Three
Urban Decay
Urban decay is the process whereby a previously functioning city, or part of a city, falls into disrepair and decrepitude. It may feature de-industrialization, depopulation, or changing population, economic restructuring, abandoned buildings, high local unemployment, fragmented families, political disenfranchisement, crime, and a desolate, inhospitable city landscape which gives the photographer ample opportunity for one of a kind photos.
Urban Decay of an American Old West Town

All along this creek in the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest in New Mexico are the remains of a once functioning community that fell into disrepair and decrepitude.  De-industrialization of the mining, logging, and the railroad led to the depopulation of the area to zero.  Abandoned buildings made of logs and other natural materials have gradually decayed or mostly destroyed by forest fires.  Often one has to look hard to see where the railroad once ran along Ponil Creek and other areas of the now Carson National Forest.  Rocks in an un-natural position that outlines the shape of buildings or depressions in the earth that once were dug outs or mines.  Sometimes just a single chimney remains.  Look careful and you can follow old wagon roads that led to logging areas or mines.
My entry for Urban Decay is a cook stove that has partially survived the elements.  I wonder how many and what meals were cooked on this wood cook stove.  How big (rather how small) was the cabin where it once stood?  If this stove could talk, it would be a lesson in history of the region.
When & what: June 23, 2008 while I was riding Chuck with my husband and two other friends. According to history books of this region, this was once a prosperous community.

Position is everything when riding a horse.  This photo was taken while we were trail riding in the Carson National Forest (New Mexico).  Notice that Russ on his horse Colt is below me and going down hill.  He had to zig zag through rocks and dead fall.  When going down a steep incline the rider pretends he is a tree and positions himself as the trees grow.  In this case, as the dead burned tree once grew.

Very little time for an entry, vacation riding in the mountains cut short because of major water leak in the house, doing this on the lap top and working with photos is difficult for me on it.  So much to do that I may not have time to visit everyone so forgive a copy and paste comment if that is the case.

I hope my entry brings a smile to your face.  I was almost laughing out loud as Dillon was helping me pull his fly sheet (a light weight mess blanket that helps protect the horses from biting flies, they also have fly masks that protect the face and eyes from flies)
And I bet you thought I was going to post a photo of our Rockin' Heart brand on the horses or one of the trail riding signs from our adventures while riding our horses.

Our host this week Mannu aka goofygreeneyes  has chosen this week's theme:
In our day to day lives, we come across an amazing array of things that come in two's . We are so used to seeing them together , that their natural compatibility escapes our eye . Familiar or unfamiliar , common or unique only to your culture, capturing these two's that come as one and sharing it with us, is what this weeks theme is all about . Remember this is NOT a competition, this about being creative having fun and being supportive of one another.

The Rockin' Heart Inseparably Entwined Brothers

Jake and Colt are maternal half brothers.  Jake 16 years old and Colt 7 years old.  Horses are herd animals and the herd instinct is strong among the equine species.  This can be an aggravation when riding.  Get out of site and that nicker, where are you little brother is sounded!  But Jake buddies on his own terms.  Head back towards camp or home and he could care less where little brother is.  In this photo the brothers appeared to be asking one another "Do you want to go that way?  I don't want to go that way!"

Note from our host this week, Cherie:
Sometimes we find it difficult to find the proper words to express our thoughts.  When that happens we often turn to old cliches.  In case you aren't familiar with what a cliche is I've included this.....

Definition of Cliche':

A trite expression, saying, description or phrase.  A figure of speech whose effectiveness has been worn out through overuse and excessive familiarity.

I hope you find this week's theme as easy as pie and  more fun than a barrel of monkeys.

According to http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Vibrant vibrant is defined as:
Vigorous, Energetic, Vital, as a Vibrant personality

"Mr. Vibrant Personality"
From the day he was born til the present. Doc has exhibited his vibrant personality.  Pick me first has always been his motto.  Push the other colt out of the way to get all the attention from visitors.  Even his trainer calls Doc his buddy and at the trainer's place, Doc has even charmed the dog.  Doc is the only horse in the barn the dog plays with.  In this photo there is no one around for Doc to charm so he is entertaining himself by playing with a stick in the water.  Doc is the first foal for me to raise so I guess you could say he holds a special place in my heart too.  A pleasure to be around and always wanting to please -- well most of the time.

Picture Perfect "Under Your Nose" Theme

Remember this is NOT a competition, this about being creative having fun and being supportive of one another.  Your Host This Week is:       Gator

It's no secrete that I enjoy activities with our horses.  My favorite is trail riding on my horse Jake, with my husband and his horse Colt in the mountains of NE New Mexico.
After one of our trips last summer I did this photo album on Multiply: Jake the Pack Horse -- No, My Saddle Horse  Since most of what is on Jake is right under my nose, I thought that would be what I posted for this week's Picture Perfect.  I know that most of you are not familiar with equestrian activities, so below the photo is a list of what I see when I look down while riding Jake on an all day trail ride.  The small photo in the upper left hand corner is a side view of me on my horse Jake in the mountains (taken by my husband, once in the while I do let him have the camera for a few minutes).

1. Easy Boot.  This is a rubber boot for the horse in case he looses a shoe.
2.  Small cordova bags to hold extra batteries, hard candy mints, and other small items that might be needed for the day and in easy reach.   These Velcro to the breast collar.
3.  GPS to keep tract of where we have ridden
4.  Lead rope that can be attached to the halter that the horse wears under the bridle.
5.  Reins that are attached to the bit
6.  The saddle
7.  Saddle pad
8.  My chinks to protect my legs
9.  The breast collar straps
10.  And of course my horse Jake
If you would like to know what else Jake carries on these trail rides click on the album mentioned above.
When and where:  The photo of me on the horse: 8.1.09 and the close up of under my nose: 8.25.09  Both photos taken in the mountains of NE New Mexico.  The entry photo was taken in camp before we left for that day's ride.

Photo Program: Cropped and enlarged on Adobe Photoshop.  Framed and numbers added:

Remember this is NOT a competition, this about being creative having fun and being supportive of one another.
Cuisine (from French "cooking; culinary art; kitchen"; ultimately from Latin coquere, "to cook") is a specific set of cooking traditions and practices, often associated with a specific culture. It is often named after the region or place where its underlining culture is present. A cuisine is primarily influenced by the ingredients that are available locally or through trade. Religious food laws can also exercise a strong influence on cuisine.
A traditional cuisine is a coherent tradition of food preparation that rises from the daily lives and kitchens of a people over an extended period of time in a specific region of a country and which has notable distinctions from the cuisine of the country as a whole.  Our host this week is Heather
oOo
Bobcat Pass Cuisine
"the Bestest Cuisine"
The bestest cusine ever is a surprise catered meal presented by wonderful friends while camping in the mountains of New Mexico.  The Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures guys showed up in our camp 8/29/09.  We were tired.  We had ridden 17 GPS miles (does not account for ups and downs of the terrain) that day and were resting in the living quarters of our horse trailer when we heard honking outside.   Our friends from near Red River, New Mexico arrived and quickly started unloading their cooking supplies and food (trimmings from rib eye steaks that they use for their Cowboy Evenings at Bobcat Pass).  The link to their great meals and entertainment.   http://www.bobcatpass.com/  They traveled over 60 mountain road miles to bring us this wonderful surprise meal.
All we had to do was enjoy their friendship and a wonderful cooked to perfection meal of Rib Eye Steak trimmings with peppers, onions, and seasoning cooked in the propane powered Disco followed by fried potatoes with onions and seasoning.  Tortillas and chips, sauces, and they even brought the drinks.  I had frozen home made oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough in the trailer freezer.  Dutch oven king sized cookies for dessert.
The photo is Vance and his youngest son Tate cooking the potatoes and onions in the Disco.  My horse Jake and Colt are in the back ground and had just finished their own cuisine of pelleted feed and coastal hay but Jake seems to think he is missing out on something better.  Jake is a beggar and will try most anything, especially if it is sweet.   And yes I did share part of my homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookie with him.
Here is a link to the blog on my site about that day.  Lots of photos of where we rode and the surprise arrival of our friends:

Suddenly Andy got off Doc and handed me the reins.  Said there was a bull with his head through the pipe fence.  Andy worked for a long time before he got just the right twist in the bull's head to fit back through the fence.  For awhile Andy thought he was going to have cut the pipe to release the bull.

"A Bull's Way of Thinking"

http://dictionary.reference.com/ has several definitions of the word Simple.  I am using more than one of the definitions for my photo this week.
Bull's way of thinking from definition # 14: lacking mental acuteness or sense: a simple way of thinking
Bull says, "I am not moving, I am quite content with where I am, just go away and leave me alone!."

Cowboy's way of thinking from definition # 1:  easy to understand, deal with, use, etc.: a simple matter; simple tools. says  "Go ahead and stay just where you are and be a bear, a mountain lion, or a wolf pack meal when the winter snows falls."

What really happened using # 2 definition: not elaborate or artificial; plain: a simple style.  The cowboy leaves the bull where he is at, knowing others will be coming this way later with a herd of cows.  Thus the bull changes his simple mind after the herd of cows arrives which is definition #6: not complex or compound

I do hope my entry brings a smile to your face as it did mine while I was doing this blog.  I am short on time this week and may not make it around to visit each page with a comment.

My entry is the bottom photo in the collage.
Whiz and Spike were hers.  Whiz is a 1980 gelding by the registered name of Dandy Prescription (http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/dandy+prescription2) who is still alive and well at Sherry's place.  Spike and his sister were found in the middle of a busy road after a bad spring wind and thunder storm.  Too young to be out of their nest.  There was a dead raccoon on the road in that area and the babies were very hungry.
