 Forever

What: My daughter and my horse

When: No sure.  I bought this horse (Randy) in the spring of 1977 when he was 6 years old and before my daughter had her first birthday the end of June.   Randy chose my daughter over me and gradually became her horse.  Randy was sold when he was 21 years old so he could raise another little girl and several other children.  He died when in his mid 30's and was buried over looking the little girl's arena.  Randy's family sent me a shadow box frame, a lock of his mane that was hand beaded and the note said to frame my favorite Randy memories.

Camera: No sure.  Either a Cannon AE-1 or an Instamatic of some sort.
Photo Editing: Scanned the 8X10 to my computer this morning from Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 and the old photo corrected slightly.  Opened into Microsoft Digital Image Pro 7.0 for the faded effect.  Then opened into Picnik for the frame and the hearts.

Urban:
–adjective
1. of, pertaining to, or designating a city or town.
2. living in a city.

characteristic of or accustomed to cities; citified: He is an urban type.
My Urban Community: Rockin' Heart Ranch Horse Herd

A herd of horses is not that much different than people who live in an urban setting.  Different personalities,  families, and of course the leadership.  Conflicts, fights, friendships, and law & order.  Someone has to be the Mayor, the Chief of Police, or the Sheriff to enforce these laws of the urban communities.  With horses there is a pecking order.  Someone is the boss, often the older and the one that has been on the place the longest.
Jake is the Mayor, the Chief of Police, and the Sheriff all in one horse.  In this photo Jake is breaking up a fight between brothers over a filly named April.  Chuck decided that the filly was his and Colt could not visit with her.  Chuck started a fight.  Not unlike a couple of teen aged brothers just a year a part in age living in an urban setting fighting over a girl.  In this case, Jake is the urban peace officer that is breaking up the fight.  He went into his urban community called the herd , separated the two brothers and drove Chuck out of the urban community (the herd) and told him to behave and stop fighting with Colt.
Just a few minutes later the urban community of horses (the herd) were back to normal.  Jake and Chuck playing and everyone getting along.  To see the album of this fight: http://mrsrh.multiply.com/photos/album/242/The_Fight_-_Jan._7_2007
Photo taken Jan. 7, 2007 with a Nikon D-50 set on automatic.  Not sure what program I used to crop.  Either Photoshop Elements or Picture It.  I added the water mark this morning.  Just learning to do this, so had to give it a try.  Sorry about the small size but the photo was already sized small and I don't have the originals anymore.  Wish I still had the large file but that was before I got an external hard drive for my photos.

And some of you thought I couldn't come up with a horse photo with an Urban theme!  I just had to think slightly out of the "box".

What is more charming than a mother and her first born?
Fajita Babealena and Rockin Heart Ima Doc
"Doc" is not even 24 hours old.
April 16, 2007     5:28 PM
"Doc" is the same colt that was catching the soap bubbles in my entry Liquid.
And my Contrast entry:

"Doc" fits the defination of Charming to a "T".  Even as a two year old he has these qualities:

1. attractiveness, allurement. 4. bauble. 5. talisman. 6. enchantment, spell. 8. spell. 10. fascinate, captivate, entrance, enrapture, ravish; allure, bewitch.

  • The power or quality of pleasing or delighting; attractiveness: a breezy tropical setting of great charm.
  • A particular quality that attracts; a delightful characteristic: A mischievous grin was among the child's many charms.
Besides being his dam's first born, Doc is the first foal I have raised so he is special to me.

    This week's theme
    is
    C O N T R A S T

Full brothers "Doc" and "Dillon" meet for the first time.  They are so much alike but yet there is so much Contrast
Contrast in color.  Doc a sorrel just like his dam and Dillon a palomino.  Dillon got his color from his buckskin sire.
Contrast in personality but yet so much a like.
Contrast in age.  Doc is a 2007 foal and Dillon is a 2008 foal.
Another Contrast is that Doc was born here on our place but Dillon was born at the dam's owner's place.  She purchased the pregnant mare and we bought the colt from her.

The theme for this week's Picture Perfect is KAPUT

    "unable to operate or continue"
My photo this week is "Little Joe" that had gone KAPUT and using my lap as a pillow.  My husband took the photo with my Nikon D-50 on August 6, 2008 in our front yard.  Little Joe's mom is grazing in the yard.  Like all babies he had played and played and played and finally went KAPUT!  Little Joe's big sister is Diamond, the palomino filly that was in PPF Growth and PPF Lines.  Little Joe was 21 days old in this photo.  He will be one year old July 15, 2009.  His registered name is Doc De Oros Poco Joe and he is a foundatin bred American Quarter Horse buckskin stud colt.

This week is a bit different.  Our insturctions were to choose a favorite past post or if new to PPF post a favorite photo from your archives.  I really like my last week's photo titled Pleasanville but decided that since Colt our 6 year old palomino gelding has been in several of my weekly PPF's that I would do a collage of all the PPF that I have done with Colt as the star.  My background for my Multiply site is the Pleasanville theme and the base for this collage that I did using Microsoft Digital Image Pro 7.0.

The theme for this week's Picture Perfect is from the movie "Pleasantville"  I am not a big movie fan but here is the description and our insturctions for this week:
"Do you remember the movie Pleasantville? Remember how it started off in black and white, and gradually as the characters grew and became more enlightened..their world was slowly infused with colour? I've used that movie as the inspiration for this weeks theme...
So... find that splash of colour in an otherwise neutral backdrop, manipulate your pictures as you feel necessary and come back and wow us with your artistic interpretations."
My photo was taken June 22, 2008.  My husband and I were in a National Forest in New Mexico.  It would have been easy to pretend we were the first to see this beautiful country many many years ago.  But in reality we were camped in a National Forest campgrounds and rode a different trail each day.  In camp we had water for our horses and a camp site with a fire pit and pick nick table.  Our primitive camp situation was a 4 horse trailer complete with a living quarters for all the comforts of home.  Yes it was sort of primitive.  We had to bring all our food and drinking water and had to use the generator because there is no electrictiy.  Also no cell phone or TV.  Can't wait to go back again this summer.  The horse is "Colt" the palomino that has stared in other Picture Perfect themes

I used Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 & and the smart brush to make the back ground black and white.  This is my first attempt using this feature.  Lucky there was a video to watch.  I'm not very good at figuring out new programs.

This photo was taken 9/28/08 at the Sheriff's Posse Arena.  We are members of the Sheriff's Posse and the club donated the use of the arena and the concession for this event.  It was a benefit Ranch Saddle Bronc Ride.  A local ranch cowboy that liked to ride the broncs had been killed in an auto accident.  His friends sponsored this contest and all the profit when to his young family.  The raised a lot of money for his wife and children from the bronc ride, auction, pass the hat donation, and concession.  If you would like to see the burst shots of this bronc from inside the chute till after he bucked so hard he fell, got up and continued bucking:

The "Picture Perfect" theme this week is "Off the Beaten Path".  I had so many choices for this one as we love to trail ride "Off the Beaten Path".  This photo was taken over the Memorial Weekend of 2006.  My husband is checking his GPS to see just where "Off the Beaten Path" we are.  He is on his horse Colt that has been in other Picture Perfect themes.  I took the photo while on my horse with a old Sony Cybershop.  Photo was edited slightly with Photoshop Elements.  The ranch we are on is the Pole Canyon Ranch.  www.polecanyon.com  It is only an hour and half drive from where we live pulling the big living quarters horse trailer.  The ranch is located in the south central Texas panhandle near Quitaque, Texas.  Also near Quitaque is Caprock Canyons State Park and Turkey, Texas (home of Bob Wills).  There are a number of photo albums, blogs, and videos on my Multiply site from the Pole Canyon Ranch.  We just spent 4 days there over the Memorial Weekend with the Panhandle Trail Riders Association.  Logged lots of miles on our horses.

I've got a lot of busy photography items but everything I could think of was a video.  What is busier than kittens at play.  Take a look it you are not too busy: http://mrsrh.multiply.com/video/item/78/Our_Kittens_at_Play and then there is a baby colt learning to use his legs. Little Joe was constantly busy unless snacking or napping.  Lots of videos on this subject.  One example: http://mrsrh.multiply.com/video/item/65/After_the_Bath_Junior_feels_really_good and then there are the horses so busy playing in the arena:  http://mrsrh.multiply.com/video/item/118/Boys_will_be_boys and then there is Colt quite busy playing in the water: http://mrsrh.multiply.com/video/item/89/Cool_Water  But all of these are videos, not stills.  My busy schedule won't allow much more looking through files so here is my entry for this week's theme busy.
The photo is Buck and April playing in the arena.  Buck is now 3 years old and April is now 4 years old.  April was Buck's baby sitter after we weaned him.  They sure had some good busy times together.

Remember Colt, the palomino that has been the star of some of my Picture Perfect themes.  He is a curious friendly guy and this often gets him in trouble.  This week's photo is the day we started to gradually introduce Frosty, a little filly to the herd.  Frosty looked up to see Colt coming to introduce himself and you would have thought Colt was the biggest yellow monster on the earth.  Mom "B" came to the resuce and in no uncertain terms told Colt to mind his own business and stop spooking her baby.  To read the blog from Frosty's point of view and see the rest of the photos:  http://mrsrh.multiply.com/journal/item/32/Introductions_to_the_Herd
Photo was taken March 25, 2008 with my Nikon D-50 on automatic setting and burst action.  Slightly enhanced and cropped on Photoshop Elements 4.0.  Frosty was 36 days old in this photo.  It can sometimes be a Spooky experience being in the same pasture with the horses when something like this happens.  If a person is in the way, you will get run over.  A horse is not going to argue with a new mother.

A Picture Perfect Theme ~ Signs ~  I have been visiting my parents this week.  On the way home I had our weekly theme in mind.  I took many photos of the signs along the rural Texas road that amounted for about a third of my 450 mile trip back home today.  But after posting a photo album about the old tractor shed of my Dad's, I changed my mind.  To read and see photos about this old shed and the many square nails all in a row:  http://mrsrh.multiply.com/photos/album/173  Another blog about the treasures of this old shed:  http://mrsrh.multiply.com/journal/item/169
