"The Old Mare's Foal"
brings joy to our hearts & a smile to our faces

At age 23 the old mare Special Sapphire aka Granny gave us a buckskin foal that we call Little Joe.  The year before she gave us the palomino filly we call Diamond.  After Little Joe was weaned we brought another smile to another face by giving Granny back to the old man that owned her most of her life.  He had not seen his beloved Sapphire since she was 16 years old.  The smile on his face when he saw her brought joy to our hearts.  The man's grand-son drove him 10 hours to take his mare back home to live out the rest of her life on the ranch where in her youth she worked for a living as a ranch horse.

What:  My husband visiting with Little Joe in the pasture
When: 8/30/08 about 4:30 PM
Camera: Nikon D-50 on automatic settings
Photo Program: Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 for slight adjustments, enlargements, cropping and a small frame.  Watermarked with our Rockin' Heart Brand (using Photoshop).

I hope my photo brings a smile to your face .  To see other photos that will bring a smile to your face click on the blue words at the top of this page.

According to:
#9 definition of sound:
the quality of an event, letter, etc., as it affects a person:  example - This report has a great sound.

"A Sound Foundation"

A good solid Sound foundation being put on a two year old stud colt that has yet to have a halter put on him.  This was during a clinic that we attended this week.  The clinician has a broken leg so he asked one of the students who was a master with the horse in his own right, to demonstrate as the clinician explained how he started colts for a sound foundation that would reap many benefits as the colt matured and later trained under saddle. Just minutes after the photo was taken another student slipped the halter on the colt, worked quietly with the colt for a few minutes following instructions from the clinician and then led him  into the arena to be turned loose with the other colts.

Before the afternoon was over one of the colts managed to put a foot where it did not belong.......horses are experts at doing this.  This colt stood quietly while the person that is horseback in the photo quietly approached the colt and removed the item that he had manged to lodge on his hoof.  Proof that a Sound foundation pays off in the long run, the colt was not scared nor hurt.

What & Where: 4 Day Horse clinic in Texas

Camera: Nikon D-50, automatic and burst setting

Photo Program: Trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0.  Still trying to learn some things.  Made 3 layers.  One of the horses/rider.  One for the background which was blurred a bit and one for the dirt of the arena that was faded.  I wanted the attention to be on the colt, the man and his mare......and I just received my newly purchased Adobe Permier Elements 8 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.  Now to learn to use them.  After seeing this photo in a larger size, I see that I have lots to learn and hours of needed practice.  The photo was also slightly cropped and my signature brand of the Rockin' Heart added.  Was resized to small using a free Microsoft resizer program.  Just right click on the photo (or a whole file of photos) and resize, original kept the large size.

As always I hope my photos brings a smile to your face.  To join the fun or just look at all the great photos click here:   Picture Perfect #6 ~ Sound ~

Our brand the Rockin' Heart is an old New Mexico registered brand that belongs to a relative of my husband that he has always liked.  In Texas brands are registered by county and we were able to register the rockin' heart in our county.
The photos in this collage were taken at various times by me using my Nikon D-50 on the burst setting and automatic.  Edited and cropped on Photoshop Elements 7.0.  A combination of Photoshop, Microsoft Digital Image 7.0, and the web site ttp://www.picnik.com/ was used to make the collage.  I made the collage earlier this week as a Valentine Greeting and having little time today was glad to have something already prepared that fit the theme.

Post a photo of what best represents
what you give honor to today.
 ~*~
Let me introduce myself.  I'm Little Joe the Rockin' Heart Ranch official news reporter.  I help Lynda with her blogs when she gets too busy to get them done.  Lynda's contacts know all about me.  I've got quite a fan club out there in Multiply land.  I'm only 1 1/2 years old and I'm the youngest horse here on the Rockin' Heart Ranch.  I was so honored when Lynda turned this week's Picture Perfect theme over to me.  She has been doing Picture Perfect for slightly over a year and I finally get this very important assignment.
This theme was easy for me as my toast is for me to have a healthy and sound year.  You see, I have had to go to the vet several times in my young life.  Right now I am in the Rockin' Heart Horse Rehabilitation Hospital --- in people terms, I'm confined to the corral and Uncle Jake as my colt sitter.  I played too hard and hurt my elbow soft tissue and have to stay in this corral until I'm better. I will say that Uncle Jake (the oldest horse on the place), Russ, Lynda, Dr. Chris and all his help do a really great job taking care of me.
Just give me a glass of champagne and start taking those pictures.  Easy assignment.........or at least that is what I thought!  Just how is a horse supposed to make a toast with a people champagne glass?
"A Toast to....Good Health"
Who:  Doc De Oros Poco Joe aka Little Joe

When: Today 2/5/10
Camera: Nikon D-50, Automatic setting and burst
Program: Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 and http://www.picnik.com/

Host: Heather
A hard decision this week as I love to take burst action photos, especially of horses and horse activities.  After going through my files I have decided on:
Poetry in Motion
A Diamond Struts Her Stuff
Subject:  Rockin Heart Diamond aka Diamond a palomino American Quarter Horse filly.  At the time of this photo she was 2 years and 1 month old.  She is playing and having a great time.
When:  April 29, 2009
Where: Rockin' Heart Ranch's Round Pen
Camera: Nikon D-50, automatic setting and burst
Programs: Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0 and framed on http://www.picnik.com/
Anachronism
Our Picture Perfect host this week is again the "Gator" and he has chosen Anachronism as the weekly theme.  Being an old country girl with a strong Texas country vocabulary, I had to study on this awhile.  As the word anachronism is not in my vocabulary.  Can't pronounce it and sure didn't know what it meant until I read Gator's explanation on this blog:
The word "Anachronism" basically means "Something which is found out of time and place" or in other words, perhaps an object from the past in a modern setting, or vice versa.

Did this photo come out of Grandma's album or is it a modern day cowboy on his mule after a long day's work?

Remember this is NOT a competition, this is about being creative, having fun, and being supportive of one another.  Out of the box thinking is encouraged.
Your Host This Week Is Gator.
Now onto this weeks theme, and this is sort of to "prime the pump" if you will. "In the style of" is a theme that will let you capture an image "In the style of" one of your favorite artists.  The sky is the limit and the use of your own inner artist is given free reign. When you create your blog this week in the title simply put ,"In The Style Of..insert artists name here".

http://fotofriday.multiply.com/journal/item/273 to see all the entries or join in on the fun.  Here's my entry for this week's theme:

In the Style of H.D. Bugbee

H.D. Bugbee was local to the Texas Panhandle area and was a western artist.  He was born in 1900 and died in 1963.  The small top right hand photo is one of Mr. Bugbee's works.  Here are some links if you are not familiar with his art:

This photo was taken at a ranch bronc ride.  It was a charity event for a young ranch hand's family.  He was killed in an auto accident.  The album on Multiply that has a number of the photos that I took that day:
and the photo that I "played with" on several programs:

I used several techniques in three programs trying to get the effect of a pencil sketch from one of my photos. Not happy with the results but posted it any way.

Cherie is your host this week.....
It's no secret that our horses bring me great joy and that I love to photograph them and share with the world here on Multiply.  Each year we do a newsletter that we send to a few friends and relatives to share our experiences of the current year.  We receive lots of complements about our newsletter, how much joy it brings, and is looked forward to each year.  Last year I missed typed an address to an elderly out of state friend.  She called and wanted to know why she had not received our newsletter, were we ok?.  The newsletter is full of photos and this year Little Joe (the buckskin yearling in last week's PP) was the editor of the Rockin' Heart Ranch News that consisted of three pages front and back of news and photos.  We sure hope it brings joy to all that receive it.  This is one of the photos I I used for our internet greeting and was one of the photos in the series of the yearling decorating the ranch for the Christmas Holidays. If you would like to see the blog and photos that this entry was taken before all the playing with programs, just click on the previous blog.

What:  Doc Olena De Oro aka Dillon, yearling palomino gelding

Camera:  Nikon D50 on burst & automatic

I sure hope this Rockin' Heart Ranch greeting spreads Joy to the World and brings a smile to your face by way of
Picture Perfect on Multiply.
As we remember the reason for the season

Before I started to school many years ago my Mom taught me some simple addition.  Two plus One equals Three. This week's theme for Picture Perfect is Three.

Two Yearling Half Brothers Plus One Basket of Christmas Decorations Equals Three Items of Mischievous Actions.

Merry Christmas from the Rockin' Heart Ranch

The Will to Live

June 16, 2008 I was enjoying a nice ride on my horse when I received a cell phone call from our trainer.  His tone was not good, I knew something was wrong.  He proceeded to tell me that he found April injured in her pen when he fed that morning, was in pain and three legged.  He would like to take her to a vet he trusted.  Of course, keep us posted.  To make a long story short this 13.2 hand feisty little filly was in bad shape.  The trainer said he would keep her at his place and follow through with the treatment recommended by the vet and for us to continue with our plans because she didn't need to make the long trip home in a trailer.  Check back when we returned.

What we saw was so upsetting and very hard to see.  Our bright eyed little filly was very sad eyed, had lost lots of weight, and her left hind leg was very crippled.  No scrapes or wounds. She wants in the trailer to go home but can't figure out how to do it.  We back the trailer to the edge of an incline and April loads.

We take her to our vet and I prepare myself for the fact that April will not be coming home.  April had made so much progress since we got her as a yearling. That scared little mistreated filly that arrived at our place now trusted us.  But she still would come out fighting if she thought she was going to get hurt and she was not cooperating with the vet for the tranquilizer shot so he could exam her.  April hates shots.  I couldn't watch and went to the pickup.  After the exam we had a conference with the vet.  His words --- most horses would have laid down and died, this filly has the will to live, let's give her a chance.

Lots on my site about April and the road to her Will to Live.  This photo was taken Oct. 19, 2009 in our arena.  April was so happy to see her pal Diamond return home from the trainer. She was feeling so good and did not want to be caught or leave the arena for the pasture.  April is still crippled but as you can see, that does not stop the little feisty filly with the
Will to Live.

April will never be sound but don't tell her that.  It's sort of like the nursery rhyme

"The Little Engine That Could"

Condensed:
I think I can
I think I can
I think I have a plan
And I can do most anything
If I only think I can
*~*
Just think you can
Just think you can
Just have that understood
And very soon youll start to say
I always knew I could
I knew I could
I knew I could
I knew I could
I knew I could
I knew I could
I knew I could, yeah!
And song "Angel Flying too Close to the Ground" by Willy Nelson.
April does not understand why no one catches her to be ridden.  Why she doesn't get to be a cutting horse. She will bang on the gate when the other horses are being worked.  Sticks her head in the halter.  Tries to follow you out the gate wanting her turn.  She just doesn't understand.  Lots of emotion on her part and mine.  Still hard to take.  A bucket of tears have been shed concerning our little filly with the
Will to Live

~ Odd One Out ~

There's One in Every Crowd

That Odd One Out

What: Working Ranch Cowboys' Association 14th World Championship Ranch Rodeo that was held in Amarillo, Texas where Ranchin' and Rodeo Collide.

When: November 12-15, 2009  Photo was taken during the Saturday night performance of the ranch bronc riding.

Why the sequined sombrero?  Who knows.  Maybe a showoff, maybe a bet or a dare, maybe one two many trips to the sponsor's booth (Bud Light), or just maybe this young man is truly an
 Odd One Out

Camera: Nikon D-50 on automatic and burst.  We were on the very top row, lighting not good so the focus not the best with the camera equipment and limited knowledge about camera settings that I have.  Reason I always use automatic settings.
Adjustments: A combination of Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0, Microsoft Digital Image 7.0, and the website Picnik for frame and mat.
Note: Decided to do the collage to show just a bit more of this young man's performance in front of a sold out crowd.  Although this young man was bucked off, hung his boot in the stirrup and drug just a bit, he appeared to survive the wreck and probably was a bit embarrassed by his performance unless he was truely an Odd One Out.

Dictionary.com's 3rd definition of Simplicity:  3. absence of luxury, pretentiousness, ornament, etc.; plainness: a life of simplicity.
The life of a real working cowgirl and her husband is filled with simplicity, maybe not by choice but by necessity.  It's not the highest paying job out there but the rewards of hard work can't be beat.  A felt hat to protect the head from the elements and a long sleeved denim shirt to also protect from the elements and riding through the mesquite and other types of brush.   While not completely absent of luxury she is not extravagant, unlike some of the horse show and rodeo cowgirls with their bling and sparkle.  A beaded hat band, a mane hair hand twisted mecate, and a good horse.  The hat band and the mecate are years old but very well taken care of.  The horse is a two year old that she is training and was purchased as a youngster.

What & When:  I took this photo Monday Nov. 2, 2009 while we were helping our friends gather and ship some heifers. I was sitting on my horse in the corral full of heifers ready to ship.
Camera:  Cannon Power Shot A1000IS on programed and burst settings that I keep in my denim shirt pocket.
Adjustments: Cropped, signed, and slightly tweaked on Photoshop Elments 7.0 and the simple frame and mat on http://www.picnik.com/

Art
Heather is our host this week for Picture Perfect and I'll use her words to describe my entry along with the dictionary meaning.

Dictionary:  noun - 1. the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
From Heather:  Art fuels creativity, ignites minds, and provides inspiration. No matter what its form, medium or context, art moves us, makes us dig deep and think, gasp in wonder..or simply shake our heads in disbelief!
It's ever changing, evolving, and often lacks specific definition, It is easier to describe it as the way something is done  "the use of skill and imagination in the creation of aesthetic objects, environments, or experiences that can be shared with others" ...rather than what it is exactly!

by the greatest artist of them all: God
and captured by Lynda
What & When: Photo taken on a walk my husband and I took Monday October 26, 2009, late in the evening just before the sun was setting.

Camera: Cannon Power Shot A1000IS on programed & burst setting

Photo Program:  Cropped & signed on Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.0  Every art piece needs a frame and a title label and that was done Picnick
